Task Three: Authentic Learning Unit of Work
For my Task Three Assignment I chose to make an authentic unit of work for a Year 5 class on the Australian Colonies. In this unit, I have found resources to begin every lesson with either an interactive activity or game relating to the Australian Gold Rush, to heighten the students motivation and introduce the lesson in a fun way.
Throughout EDN205 I have learnt the importance of integrating ICT into the classroom and specifically for me the history classroom. Below are my unit outlines, resources and lesson plans for any teachers who would like to use this unit of work in their own classroom. In the side panel to right you will find all the documents for this unit of work including; - A basic outline of the unit for teachers, outlining the project the students will be engaging in, and how it relates to the Australian Curriculum. - Specific lesson plans for this unit, describing the tasks for each lesson as well as the resources etc. - The Australian Colonies Video Diaries Project Booklet for students. This booklet has all of the information for the students and outlines each specific task that students have to complete. - The Teachers Marking Rubric for the final presentation. - The Peer Assessment and Self-Assessment sheets for the final presentation. - The Power Point presentation that can be used for the first lesson for a re-cap and quiz of 'Australian Colonies', and an introduction to diaries and video diaries. Below is each lesson broken down to give you a sense of how the unit would be run, and any web resources for that lesson is hyperlinked underneath. Lesson One: This lesson is an introduction to the project, by re-capping what the students already know and introducing new concepts. Students will be receiving their student booklets and beginning the first and second tasks of creating their character profile and coming up with three question to guide their historical inquiry. Lesson Two: The second lesson begins with a short video about migrants to Australia (see hyperlink below) to engage the children. Students will then research their characters using the internet, making sure they answer their questions. Lesson Two Resource Lesson Three: The third lesson will begin with a Gold Rush game where we will play multiplayer on the smartboard and students have to try and get as much gold as possible. We will then be building on the research of the second with students continuing their historical inquiry into their characters lives. Students will also be creating and refining their character profile. Lesson Three Resource Lesson Four: Lesson four begins with the same game, making sure all students have a go and writing high scores on the board. Students will then be beginning to plan their diary entries and write their drafts. Lesson Four Resource (same as above) Lesson Five: Lesson Five will begin with an individual game that the students can explore and play pretending to be a mine and having to apply for a mining licence etc. Students will continue writing their diary entries, after writing a draft students will do a self edit followed by a peer edit. Lesson Five Resource Lesson Six: To show the students different classes using technology to tell historical stories, we will be watching the youtube video 'Eureka Stockade' (see hyperlink below). After completing their drafts and editing students will be typing up their diaries in Microsoft Word. Lesson Six Resource Lessons Seven & Eight Students will begin both lessons playing the Gold Miners game, trying to stay alive and find gold on the Victorian gold fields. They will then be filming their diary entries in costume with the iPads, and editing them together as one clip in iMovie. Students will be writing a thirty second introduction to their character and diary entries. Lessons Seven and Eights Resource Lesson Nine: This lesson will be a presentation lesson where each student will orally present their introduction and then the class will view their video diaries. Students will fill out peer assessments for each student and a self-assessment, and will receive a marking rubric from the teacher. This could be extended or shortened to suit your time frame, as you can add or take out tasks easily. For the purpose of this assignment I have only related these lessons to the History curriculum however you could cross over into Media Arts and English... Happy teaching! |
